Subject: Gliga Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 19:02:34 -0400 From: Susan Grzesnikowski To: The Violin Collector Hello Jacob, Indeed, it is a very nice instrument for this price range! The workmanship is beautiful and the weight is delightful. The ease of playing in the high positions (upper bout not too wide or thick) is a treat. I had to work with the pegs for awhile ... I suppose it's the humidity in NC. They had become very swollen ... I couldn't properly wrap a string because the pegs did not go through far enough to expose the hole any farther in than the pegbox wall. They are improving and the pegs work much smoother now. I changed the dominants to Helicores the 1st night and they sounded okay to start with, but yesterday the sound seemed to deteriorate, so I put on a set of Thomastic-Infeld Reds and the violin seems much more settled. The G may need a Blue, but for now I'm leaving it alone. The sound is very gentle (the sweeet you associate with a Strad rather than a Guarneri) and VERY even on all strings (very notably the E). There is a roundness I'm expecting to hear as time goes on. I'd like to touch base with you in 3 and 6 months to let you know of the progress. Does Vasile make a Guarneri model and if so, is the sound characteristically different? I've taken enough of your time, but I want you to know how much I appreciate the instrument, your service and your interest in the Gliga instruments. I've enjoyed doing business with you and will certainly leave positive feedback. Be back in touch later with a progress report. Thanks again for everything! Susan
